What Can I Feed My Chickens?

Are chickens legal in my city or state? Uh, sometimes the eggs are pretty nasty as in poopy. I think it may have to do with the type of breed you get. As for taste, they taste like the eggs you get in the grocery store. What I like about them is that they are more nutritious and I know that the ladies were treated humanely. I also like the texture and the rich color that I get from my fresh eggs. During the winter I put a heat lamp in the coop, egg production goes down but doesn't completely stop.

Second, egg-laying hens and broiler hens (another term for meat hens) don't taste like the same bird. While they both come from the same chicken breed, throughout the years they've been bred to either be more productive egg layers, or to produce more meat. The broiler hen vs. egg-laying hen is a crazy agricultural thing that has happened over the last 100 years,” said Laflamme. In fact, the meat from Pete and Gerry's birds doesn't make it to the supermarket shelves because it's sold at ethnic food markets, where the flavor of a gamier bird is desired.

I started off with 8 chickens and made a nest box for each chicken. It turns out they all used the same 2 nest boxes for laying eggs! I've even seen 3 chickens in the same nest box at the same time - therefore, you don't need to make too many boxes. They tend to gravitate toward the same box. If you have a big flock - you'll need to make more. In some of the links I've provided, there are some excellent pictures of nest boxes, diagrams, and "how-to" instructions for building nest boxes. A view of a couple of my nest boxes is pictured above.

Dissenting vote Commissioner Pete Thibodeau voiced concerns that the ordinance amendment was not restrictive enough. His concerns were that people would house the birds in their front yards and that there were no provisions in the amendment for how the chickens were to be housed. "We could have chickens running around in the town's major streets." said Thibodeau.

Our chick-to-chicken odyssey began shortly after my hubby, Pat, and I, moved into our new home in the mountain community of Big Bear, CA. We were so excited as our fledgling flock of four transformed from tiny moving cotton balls into fully feathered friends. In due time, the eggs, both brown and white, showed up, sometimes in a newly discovered pile under the chicken coop, sometimes in a nest inside. We loved to spend time inside their run,” which also housed Nubian goats and a pot belly pig named Zoe. We would each pull up a white plastic chair and sit back to enjoy the show” as they scrambled to and fro.
