A Workshop In Backyard Chicken Harvesting

If you like the idea of keeping chickens in your backyard, but aren't sure you're ready to fully commit, a farm southeast of Guelph will rent them to you. There were no community members in attendance who spoke in opposition to the amendment, however, Commissioner Thibodeau did have some reservations about the change. He stated his concern that if any size parcel could have 10 hens there could be problems. Commissioner Drake tried to reassure him that most of the newer home communities with these smaller sized lots were governed under HOA's and the point was made that most of the HOA's don't allow any hens, so it shouldn't be much of an issue. Thibodeau was also concerned about there being no limitations set on where the hens could be housed. He stated there could be traffic issues if chickens housed in front yards were to get out and roam into the streets. Commissioner Stinnett replied that there were no restrictions on cats or dogs in the same manner, and so she didn't see any reason for there to be such restrictions on the chickens either.

As people grow more concerned about the economy, the environment, food safety, emergency preparedness and animal welfare, they are returning to basic skills their grandparents knew well vegetable gardening, canning food and raising chickens, says Coddington. DISCUSSION: Only residents living in a residential single family home are allowed to have chickens. If you live in a duplex, or other multi-family structure, chickens are not allowed. But see 3. (b) below regarding the possibility of chickens in other zoning categories.

With some head-scratching and basic carpentry skills you can build your own chicken coop - there are lots of plans available online You can save time and hassle though by buying a pre-made chicken coop. Williams-Sonoma sells them for $200-$1,500, but there are also plenty of small builders out there, such as Saltbox Designs , which produces eye-catching coops that keep your omelette-providers safe from predators (see image below).

After a whirlwind three month campaign, an east coast CLUCK group was handed a 4-0 defeat when the Port St. Lucie city commission voted to not change the city's laws regarding backyard chickens. Many of the arguments used against chickens were the same tired assumptions and sketchy accusations that were heard in Sarasota, among them that a few hens would cause a perceptible rise in backyard predators.

The hens haven't commented on their new artwork, but they've been pretty distracted scratching since I added some temporary chicken-wire fencing to enclose their part of the back yard. I let them out when I'm about and able to keep the local cats at bay. The girls do appear happier and less focused on their goddamned egos and pecking order. In their spare time, they've been giving us three to five lovely brown, buff and blue eggs most every day.

We put a potted plant inside the run and they demolished the leaves in no time. So my DH provides them with some grass or vegetables from our garden and feeds it to them. Since the chickens are still young, he cuts up the greens so they could eat these better. We started giving them greens at a very early stage as soon as they started eating their mother's food which is why they are so used to having greens now.
